San Angelo Students Awarded Scholarships by local University of Texas Alumni

Nine Class of 2023 West Texas seniors were awarded scholarships by the San Angelo Chapter of the Texas Exes, the official alumni association of The University of Texas at Austin, and honored at the organization’s annual Scholarship Luncheon held on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. Those seniors are:

  • Gilbert Anicama (Central High School, Major: electrical and computer engineering)
  • Broc Crumrine (Central High School, Major: neuroscience with a special interest in Alzheimer’s, dementia and neuron signaling)
  • Hadley Hallmark (Central High School, Major: Business)
  • Kenzie King (Central High School, Major: Biology/Nutrition with a minor inChinese culture)
  • Paula Maysonet (Central High School, Major: Psychology with a special interestin helping people with mental illness),
  • Patrick Smith (Central High School, Major: Physics and Engineering)
  • Audrey Tillman (Irion County High School, Major: Psychology with a special interest to pursue medical school or physical therapy)
  • Brianna Vazquez (Miles High School, Major: Biology with a special interest inmedicine)
  • Brooke Vazquez (Miles High School, Major: Biology with a special interest to pursuemedical school)

In addition to celebrating the student scholars, local entrepreneur, community leader and distinguished UT alumnus J. Mark McLaughlin spoke at the luncheon. He highlighted advancements and opportunity at the University, and urged scholarship recipients to supplement their major coursework and “test the waters and expand [their] horizons gaining additional knowledge in other areas,” and going on to note that we are in a “marvelous time of accelerated discoveries.” After referencing some trailblazing UT alumni and current impactful work emerging from the campus, Mr. McLaughlin concluded his speech by issuing an encouraging challenge to the scholarship recipients asking, “What will you do?”
