1 Big Thing: Cornerstone's Lesli Salas finishes high school career with 9 gold medals in 3 years at TAPPS State Meet

The news: Lesli Salas, a senior at Cornerstone Christian School, racked up three medals at the TAPPS State track meet in Waco over the weekend with wins in the 3200, 1600, and 800. For the 3200 and 1600, Salas broke the 1A state records, which were set by her, with times of 11:13 and 5:10 respectively. Overall, she has nine gold medals during the last three years. She might have had more but missed races because of the Covid pandemic in 2020.

Family Matters: Not to be outdone by his sister, sophomore David Salas won the 3200 and 1600 for the second straight year.

Why this matters: Salas ends her high school running career as the best athlete in school history passing Andria Nussey who ended up as a national champion for Angelo State. Salas' accomplishments mirror that of Rochelle's Bonnie Richardson who won multiple team titles by herself in 1A in the mid 2000s before attending Texas  A&M

What's next: Salas will decide where to take her talents in college. Several D1 schools have interest, and Angelo State offered her a full ride with no housing. Still, odds are she chooses a school in the metroplex area.
